Casted Legs & Hug-a-Leg

HUG-A-LEG product is an anti-rotation device designed to keep a casted leg from rolling outward. In order for new bone to grow between two broken pieces, the edges NEED to stay Aligned and in Contact. When the gap between broken bones is too wide the bone can not mend itself by growing new bone to bridge the gap between the broken ends. It is likened to Cement not working when the pieces don't match or the pieces keep moving.

*Medical Fact : The foot rotates outward about 15 degrees more than the upper leg when lying down. That causes the fractured bones, hematoma, callus, torn nerves-vessels-tendons and ligaments to rotationally move 15 degrees apart when lying down. This interupts healing of blood vessels needed for new bone to grow well.

"Yet, only when there is - less than 5 degrees of malrotation - is the healing ideal. More than 5 degrees of rotational angulation results in various degrees of malalignment -- with a long term outcome of subsequent arthritis and cartilage degeneration at the joints proximal and distal to the fracture. Peak pressures of malaligned bones - are responsible for degeneration of the joints along the kinetic chain. This is well documented in the Medical literature and is costly to national health system"

The Cast on a leg only covers the Skin. This means that as the leg rotates outward, the broken ends are pulled further apart. This is because the foot area rotates outward at a greater angle than the upper part of the leg. The sharp ends dig into nerves causing Pain and the fracture does not heal. The pain is worse when the person reclines. Torn Achilles tendons that are stapled to the heel bone, can snap off the bone as the foot rolls outward straining the torn soft tissues.

< A Malunion is when the fracture-(broken bones) heal with a deformity - that results from the bones healing at an improper angle due to Rotation and shortening. This is the Reason for Using HUG-A-LEG. It prevents the Rotation that causes shortening, angulation and bad alignment of bones. It prevents tendons which have been repaired from snapping apart and off the bone. You see, it takes at least one full month for any wound to regain 90% of it tensile strength - the resistance to re-tearing. During that crucial time tissues need to be stabilized to heal properly - Welcome HUG-A-LEG !

OFTEN TIMES ABNORMAL ROTATION OF THE INJURED LEG OCCURS WHEN LYING DOWN AND RESTING. At that time the foot rolls out more than the upper leg. The patient feels PAIN. That is when HUG-A-LEG Helps!! That is because of the following: There is too much space between the ends of broken bone when broken edges move away from each other as the leg rolls out when you rest. This is because the foot moves at an angle greater than the upper leg. This causes rotational and angular deformity-which results in the bones, tendons and ligaments not healing on time and not healing at all in some cases. This is called Delayed Healing and Non-union (meaning the bones - tissues - do NOT unite - and stay broken and torn).

Malunion of bones causes an abnormal distribution of stress on the bones and this results in Painful Posttraumatic Arthritis. This type of Arthritis can develop in a few months-or it can plague the patient 20 years later. Severe Arthritis can require a costly total joint replacement-with potential for complications and loss of time from work and play.

"The HUG-A-LEG Orthopedic device keeps the injured lower leg from twisting and stable during the recovery period from injury or surgery - this is how HUG-A-LEG keeps soft tissues from further injury, additional damage, trauma or tearing."
